At-hand Creations out of Nature
There is a world of possibilities to explore…
There are the ones who are curious with making trials and the others
who are less experimenters.
As city-dwellers, and I am one of them, I realize that we know so little
about simple, accessible, at-hand creations out of nature.
I have recently learnt a technique that will blow you away.
I have learnt to create bacterial cellulose; bacterial cellulose that can
transform into textile.
It is about learning the process of growing bacterias with yeast, learning
about their reproduction and to become the witness of this growth
amazement.
Meeting nature is about investigation, experimenting is about
investigation, creating is about investigation too.
While investigating, I came to realize that delicate manipulation of
natural compounds can provide many wonders.
To have access to the making, remaking, to enhance the making, we
don’t need much; we need some knowledge/know-how and that spark of
will and curiosity.
Liat Danieli, a Tel Aviv based multi-disciplinary artist is a great
experimenter and the sole artist who teaches the hybridization of
organic materials, among other things, in Israel.
Bacterial cellulose can be reproduced easily, from one membrane to
another, from one jar to another, and moreover the passing of this know-
how can be excitingly multiplied and spread forward.
Can you imagine an organic material that can be « home-made »,
reproduced and re-used with zero waste? This is something to dwell on,
for the sake of sustainability.
From a little scale to a very wide one, this is a topic to teach, a
knowledge to spread.
If it started as a curiosity for an unusual art course , it turned very fast
into a place where one consciously gets the potentiality for self creation
and the urgent need for the expansion of an art hub for sustainability.
