Investment banks to divest from fossil fuels
Extinction Rebellion is a citizens-driven international movement using non-violence and civil disobedience to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency. The actions we perform usually include art to attract and retain the public’s attention.
Israel is a country with many demonstrations and problems and it’s not easy catching the eyes of the public or of the media. Art helps us demonstrate our message in a blunt, clear and beautiful manner. In our series of actions against investment banks – demanding they divest from fossil fuels – we used art many times. The photos come from two actions.
The first one is a meal of investment “pigs” lunching on oil and on our expense.
The second is a Green-Wash where the activists demonstrated how the investment bank’s declarations about responsible investments (esg) was actually greenwash. As the signs said: “they only distract, they don’t divest”. The activists were washing a big lump of manure with a green liquid.
These actions were very successful since one of Israel’s biggest investment banks decided to reduce investments in fossil fuels yearly and to divest completely by 2030. The actions will continue until all investment banks do the same.
